A yellow-tagged shark has been reported from Scotland. This is the second re-sighting from Scotland this year following three during last season. All but one of these Scottish re-sightings have been of sharks tagged off Inishowen, Co. Donegal with the other, a shark tagged in Co. Cork.
The shark was reported by Richard Fairburns who sighted the shark off Barra in the inner Hebrides on 2 July approximately a month after it was tagged. This is a distance of 180km. This work strongly suggests there is a northerly movement of sharks from Ireland to Scotland.
The tagging study carried out by the Inishowen Basking Shark Study Group has been a great success with a 105 re-sighting rate, which is incredibly high. The group are hoping to continue this work in 2011 before a full evaluation of the tagging project can be made.
The IBSSG would like to thank once again their colleague Colin Speedie for obtaining this record.
