The Irish Basking Shark Study Group have deployed a number of different Satellite based transmitters over the years. The majority have been wildlife computers transmitters of the PAT or PATF variety.

In 2013 we have a new research programme ‘Shark Spotting’ through which we will deploy a number of wildlife computers Spot tags. SNH and Mattew Witt of the University of Exeter have comprehensively demonstrated the value of SPOT tag deployments for the investigation of meso-scale movements in coastal waters.

Shark Spotting project is is funded by the Lough Agency, a Private Donor and the Inishowen basking shark study group. Technical support is provided by Queens University Belfast.

The main Focus of the project is:

To investigate fine and meso scale shark movements with particular emphasis on predator – prey associations and relationships.

Secondary aims include:

  •  Identify hot- spots of basking shark surface activity around the Irish coast
